Pneumococcal Vaccination in Primary Care
Pneumococcal disease is any infection caused by the Gram-positive bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae (commonly known as pneumococcus). When pneumococcus is discussed, thoughts turn primarily to pneumonia. But pneumococcus causes many infections, and they can occur anywhere in the body. Of those who become infected with pneumococcus, 1 in 4 will develop pneumonia, 1 in 4 will develop meningitis, and 1 in 10 will die.
